The Rake -

Even the soil can itch.

When seeds rot and sprout,

and young roots whine, digging into the earth's breast,

the soil laughs, raising dust like rice cakes—

as if mad, unable to bear the tickle.

At such a time, a sharp-eyed farmer

will instantly perceive it,

waking the rake from its lazy nap in the haystack,

and slowly, indiscriminately scratch the soil's

back, armpits, lower body, and calves,

as if it were his own flesh.

And the bare-headed sprouts,

knowing this as love, will grow,

chattering noisily like children on their first day of school.

Where can one find a love as tender and beautiful

as the heart that scratches when it itches?

The joy of those tender bodies

that tingle upon meeting a rake—

All living things call for a rake,

for they itch as they live.
