Melbourne Story - 8. Two Jobs

After the Chinese boys left and no replacements were hired, the workload suddenly increased. I had to work all day, every day of the week. I was exhausted and wished I could take a break, but that wasn’t possible.

A few weeks later, one day a young manager came up to me and said,

“You’re actually earning much more than the managers who work here.”

In my mind I thought, Well, of course I am. I work that much. I simply laughed it off.

But a few days later he asked me if I would like to switch to a full-time position. I told him I would rather remain a casual employee.

If I became full-time, the hourly wage would be about 25 percent lower than casual pay. However, full-time workers were guaranteed four weeks of paid annual leave. They were also paid even if they did not work on public holidays, and they received nine days of paid sick leave each year. Overall, the difference was not that significant.

As a permanent casual worker, however, I could work more than eight hours a day. In Australia, casual workers usually work about four or five hours a day, three or four days a week. Many people therefore move from one workplace to another after finishing their shift, trying to earn more as long as their bodies allow it. In most restaurants and hotels, many of the waiting staff—waiters and waitresses—work under this kind of casual arrangement.

After I declined the full-time offer and chose to remain casual, something unexpected began to happen. From one day to the next, several kitchen hands were hired as full-time staff. Soon after that, my working hours started to decrease. My shifts gradually dropped to only three or four days a week.

It was completely unexpected. I had already been working there for three years.

I felt a sense of unfairness. Do I really deserve to be treated like this? At the time, however, I did not yet understand that such things were quite common in Australia. I could only feel frustrated.

Since several full-time workers had already been hired, I could not suddenly go back and say, “Then make me full-time as well.”

So I began looking for another job. Through a job search agency, I was introduced to a position in the kitchen of the ANZ Bank building in the city. Fortunately, the job offered eight hours a day, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For a while, after finishing work at 3 p.m., I would take a bus to the Italian restaurant and arrive there before 6 p.m., working again until midnight.

My body was extremely tired, but fortunately the restaurant gave me one or two weekday shifts as well as full shifts on weekends, so I slowly adapted.

I had come to a foreign country with nothing. At the age of fifty-two, the white-collar worker I had once been in Korea suddenly became a blue-collar laborer. It was not easy. But there was no room for pride or saving face.

I was simply grateful that I could work and earn a living each day. 

8. 두 가지  잡

중국 아이들이 빠져나간 이후 충원이 되지 않은 상태에서 갑자기 일이 많아져, 일주일 내내 하루 종일 일하니 피곤하여 쉬고 싶었지만 그러지도 못하고 있던 차에 몇 주가 지난 어느 날, 젊은 매니저가 와서 이런 말을 했다.“여기서 일하는 매니저들보다 네가 받는 웨이지가 훨씬 많다.”

나는 속으로 ‘그만큼 일하니 당연하지’ 하고 웃어넘겼다. 그런데 며칠이 지난 어느 날, 풀타임(full-time)으로 전환하는 게 어떻겠느냐고 묻기에 나는 그냥 캐주얼(casual)로 남겠다고 하였다.

풀타임이 되면 캐주얼보다 시급이 약 25% 정도 줄어든다. 하지만 1년 중 4주의 휴가가 보장되며, 이 기간 동안 웨이지는 전액 지급된다. 또 법정 공휴일(public holiday)에는 쉬어도 웨이지가 나오고, 연간 9일간의 병가(sick leave) 역시 웨이지가 지급된다. 전체적으로 따져보면 그리 큰 차이는 아니었다.

하지만 나는 permanent casual로서 하루 8시간 이상을 일할 수 있었고, 통상 호주에서의 캐주얼은 하루 4~5시간, 주 3~4회 근무가 대부분이다. 따라서 그런 사람들은 이곳에서 일한 후 다른 곳으로 옮겨 또 일을 하며, 몸만 허락한다면 더 많은 수입을 얻을 수 있다. 대부분의 레스토랑이나 호텔에서 웨이터나 웨이트리스 같은 waiting staff들은 이런 캐주얼들이 많다.

내가 캐주얼로 남겠다고 한 이후, 어느 날부터인지 풀타임으로 지정받은 키친핸드 서너 명이 들어오기 시작했고, 그 이후부터 나의 하루 근무 시간은 줄어들기 시작하더니 일하는 날짜도 일주일에 3~4일로 감소했다. 전혀 뜻밖의 일이었다. 여기서 일한 지 3년이나 되었는데 말이다.

‘내가 이런 대접을 받아야 하나’ 하는 생각이 들었지만, 호주에서는 이런 일이 너무나 일상적이라는 사실을 그때의 나는 모르고 그저 씩씩거리기만 했다. 이미 여러 명의 풀타임 직원이 채용된 상태에서 뒤늦게 “나도 풀타임으로 해달라”고 말할 수는 없었다.

잡 서치(job search)를 하여 에이전트를 통해 소개받은 곳이 시티에 위치한 ANZ 은행 키친이었는데, 다행히 하루 8시간 근무에 오전 7시부터 오후 3시까지였다. 그래서 한때는 오후 3시에 일이 끝나면 버스를 타고 이동해 이탈리아 레스토랑에 오후 6시까지 도착해 자정까지 근무하곤 했다.

몸은 무척 피곤했지만 다행히 이곳은 평일에 한두 번, 토요일과 일요일은 종일 근무가 있어 그런대로 적응해 나갈 수 있었다. 가진 것 없이 타국으로 이민 와 52세에, 한국에서의 화이트칼라가 졸지에 블루칼라로 변신해 일하려니 괴롭지 않을 수 없었다. 하지만 자존심을 지키며 체면을 차릴 여유도 없었다.하루하루 일할 수 있다는 것에 그저 감사할 따름이었다.
